Academics

7th and 8th grade students at Legacy are enrolled in the following core classes:

  • English Composition
  • Literature/Research
  • Math (specific courses are assigned based on placement test)
  • Social Studies
  • Science

Electives

The following elective classes are offered based on student interest and enrollment.

Computers I

One semester of technology is available for all 7th and 8th grade students. This class will include (but may not be limited to) keyboarding and the exploration of various computer applications.

Physical Education

Students will build skills, strategies, and teamwork necessary to participate in several sports. Throughout the course students improve also develop the five essential core fitness components; muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardio-vascular strength, and body composition. Other areas of emphasis include nutrition, proper exercise technique, various lifetime fitness activities, and creating personalized physical activity plans. Our curriculum resources include Sport Education and Fitness for Life for Middle School.

Art 2D

This class explores the basics of art appreciation, principles and the seven elements of art: line, space, shape, form, value, color and texture. Activities include working with two-dimensional media including drawing and painting.

Art 3D

This class explores the seven elements of art in depth, as well as the creation of three-dimensional art including ceramics and sculpture.

Band

Junior High Band is designed to develop and refine the skills learned in elementary band. Emphasis will be placed on musical fundamentals (rhythm, pitch, articulation, dynamics) in an ensemble set-ting. The focus of band rehearsals will be on producing a concert-ready performance near the end of each semester. This class can be divided into Beginning Band and Advanced Band based on enrollment and scheduling.

Orchestra

Junior High Orchestra is designed to develop and refine the skills learned in elementary orchestra. Emphasis is placed on musical fundamentals (rhythm, pitch, articulation, dynamics) in an ensemble setting. The focus of rehearsals is on producing a concert-ready performance near the end of each semester. This class can be divided into Beginning Orchestra and Advanced Orchestra based on enrollment and scheduling.

Choir

Junior High Choir is designed to develop and refine the skills learned in elementary choir. Vocal techniques and music reading are emphasized, and students are given the opportunity to explore various musical sources and styles. The focus of rehearsals will be on producing a con-cert-ready performance near the end of each semester. This class can be divided into Beginning Choir and Advanced Choir based on enrollment and scheduling.

Musical Theatre

Students will form a performing ensemble that explores different aspects of music theatre production. Projects may include group, individual participation, rehearsals, improvisation, and memorization. Activities may focus on directing, singing, and dramatic or music theater productions.

Spanish I

The objective of the program is to develop competency in communicating clearly and accurately in the native language of another culture. The class incorporates all four elements of language learning – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – with emphasis on actively using language in both instruction and classroom activities.

Spanish II

This course will build and expand from basic grammatical structures learned in Spanish 1. The objective of the program is to continue to develop individuals who appreciate learning about new cultures. The class incorporates all four elements of language learning – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – with emphasis on actively using language in both instruction and classroom activities.
